Lusher Charter School has a unique curriculum founded on a concept of arts integration which weaves the arts into all of our classes. The school has a rigorous academic program, with accompanying higher expectations. We believe it is important for families to understand these foundations of our program before making their choices for an education partner for their children.
Fall of 2022 will be an exciting year for Lusher Middle School, as fifth grade students will move from the Willow Street Campus and join grades 6 and 7 to form Lusher’s newly re-configured Middle School at our Loyola Avenue Campus.
Middle School is a time of considerable mental, physical and emotional growth that will shape how students see themselves in relation to others. A hallmark of the Lusher Way is putting students at the center of all decisions.
At Lusher, we believe that success starts with a culture of kindness and a deliberate effort to emphasize social/emotional learning. In order for students to face the complexity of the world, they must embrace empathy, leadership, creativity and teamwork. Whole-child education is a psychological approach that has long been at the root of Lusher’s success. The core values that consistently weave through our community at Lusher are: Kindness, Respect, Hard Work and Responsibility.
Lusher’s arts curriculum offers each student a broad exposure to the arts and appropriate instruction in those art forms in which students demonstrate interest and aptitude. Nurturing creativity, as well as high academics, is a powerful combination for a child. Our professional teaching artists are trained, practicing artists in their fields, which can include: creative writing, dance, media arts, classical music, vocal music, symphonic band, jazz, theater arts, technical theater and visual arts.
Lusher Middle School offers a rigorous, high academic program of instruction which allows qualifying students the opportunity to earn early high school credit (Carnegie units) in Algebra I in 7th grade. The Middle School curriculum is taught within a gifted framework- accelerated, compressed content utilizing problem solving and critical thinking skills. Our specialized 6+ math offered in 6th grade provides the opportunity for students to opt into advanced rigorous math classes to prepare them for algebra 1 in 7th grade.
Each year, approximately 60 percent of Lusher’s 7th graders qualified for the former Duke TIP program which recognized top students in the 18-state region of the southeastern U.S.
Lusher Middle School offers many opportunities for student athletes to hone their leadership skills. Lusher’s athletic philosophy stresses time management, personal development, confidence building, discipline and learning to tackle challenges and adversity. Lusher is committed to developing students into skillful athletes through expert coaching, rigorous training and state-of-the art facilities, such as the Atlantic-Bridge Gymnasium and the newly redesigned Brees Family Field. Many of our students balance athletics while pursuing creative artistic interests.
