Carter Manalla (’28) won second place and $250 in the Socíedad Española’s María García Daly Essay Contest. The annual contest honors the late Daly, a founding member of Socíedad Española who worked for the Spanish consulate in New Orleans for many years. The topic of the essay was “Spain’s Influence on Jazz Music in New Orleans.” Vivian Deschapelles Coutin, president of the Socíedad, and Daly’s family presented the award at the reception, which also included a talk on Flamenco Rebirth in New Orleans and a traditional Spanish merienda of tortilla Española, gazpacho, and empanadas. The Socíedad Española was founded in 1974 as a cultural organization to promote Spanish culture, traditions, and language in New Orleans. Congratulations, Carter!
