Mardi Gras

Our 7th grade students had an amazing day on Friday, February 2nd with some phenomenal guest speakers on Mardi Gras and African American history. The Queen of the Krewe of Harmonia spoke about her organization and answered student questions.  Bruce Sun Pi Barnes spoke about the Skull and Bones Gang and played music with the kids. In the 7th grade history class, Collin Makamson from the Historic New Orleans Collection spoke about second-line history and traditions.

Mr. Hart had his band students perform second-line songs, while Ms. Matherne had the chorus kids sing Iko, Iko and explain the history of the song.

In history class, students researched various African American historical figures from U.S. and LA History and then created a float by groups to display their findings. In ELA class, students read and discussed an article about Bruce Sun Pi Barnes as well.

We would like to thank 7th grader Henry Kwaske for designing the parade banner.  Way to go, Henry!

Thank you to our 7th grade teachers and our Arts Director Ms. Neelis for organizing such a wonderful learning experience for the students.
